This week was taken up with recovering from my ethnographic experience and viewing those of others. Thus my lifestream got a bit neglected. Pity the hard work of ploughing through Haraway doesn’t show up on it. I have to admit reading this text, ironically, made me regret for the first time not having face to face tutorials. I could really do with help, the kind of intense help you get with a face to face discussion. While I understand the overall message there is so much I just don’t get. It is like a treasure chest of ideas that are meaningless to me. So many of her statements left me crying “Why? What do you mean by that?”
Anyway, I will leave deeper ponderings to another post, in the meantime – check out your cyborg name:

Hi Tracy
I feel your pain! I have really struggled with Haraway, and as a result my confidence in this course has taken a bit of a beating! So far I at least understood what was going on, but I swear Haraway just makes words up! I also would have loved to have had a little face-to-face chat about this. Now I feel so far behind because I have not been able to dent the remaining reading whilst decifering Haraway. At this point my enjoyment and enthusiasm for the course has faltered; I hope I can get it back!
For a bit of light relief, my cyborg name is S.A.R.A.H.: Synthetic Artificial Rational Assassination Humanoid! Scary!!!
Mine is “Journeying Electronic Neohuman”.
Sorry to hear you both struggled with Haraway – it is a difficult piece but, as you’ve probably already gathered and we’ll see more this week, it’s been quite important in a range of work that’s come after. This week’s core readings may shed some more light on things. There are also a number of really useful links and videos being posted up in Twitter, so do check those out if you’re still getting to grips ‘cyborg manifesto’. Time zones permitting, maybe you and Sarah could arrange an impromptu Skype session to discuss cyborgs and Haraway in real time? I’m sure there are others who would want to join in.
Out of interest, how did you find Hayles?
