Dave has produced a series of videos where he talks about himself and constructs his image or identity for fans. His ‘10 minute life history of Dave, of Davesfarm’ was how I initially found Davidsfarm – because of my interest in life histories. It was posted on 23 August 2007

hey dave I also went to northridge public school for 4 years of my grades. I know it’s not a big deal for u but I thought that was pretty cool, since I’ve been whaching your videos ever since I was 12 I’m 14 now and love cars and building things like go-carts and fixing cars I just seem to get more and more into them even though it sounds kind of stupid. that’s I whach every video of yours they rock!

I did my own “Ride back in time” this past fall after I bought my Harley. Sparked a lot of good ol memories. One neighborhood I grew up in from age 2-12 was still being built when we moved in. All the trees were so amall back then. It was hard to recognize everything the way it is now. Everything seemed so old. The newness of the neighborhood I grew up in was long gone but some of the memories are still fresh. The people in my old house removed the garage and turned it in to living space! Sad…

As Davidsfarm achieved more fame and a group called ‘the haters’ started to make allegations about Dave’s past, Dave starts adding more flesh to his background and talks more openly about his problems. In ‘My addiction, Davidsfarm’ posted on 23 October 2009, Dave talks about his lifelong struggle in being a hoarder.

You know… I think we all have addictions…. One of mine is You-tube, another is Christmas and all the stuff that goes along… I have proably 400 dollars in ribbon, and other crafting and decorating stuff… we all have addictions…

Hoarders hoard useless junk, you hoard practical things.
Are junk yard owners hoarders? No they actually provide a part to someone in desperation. Not like your grandma from the recession who holds on to rotting Oreo’s.
There is also a video called ‘Daves Mental Illness’ posted on 8 January 2009. The mental illness he talks about is manic depression with an emphasis on the manic side. At the end of the video he says because of his increased sexual arousal caused by his manic state he made some mistakes and he went to jail and he says some of the stuff reported about him is true and he will get back to that later. What I noticed later is that this video was not posted in the Davidsfarm channel but in a channel called Kidsfarm and it is the only video loaded on that channel. And the links from that channel is to a site which has ‘evidence’ of David Rock’s police record and other evidence which claims that Dave is a pedophile. When I looked again at the video, it is Dave speaking but you can see the cuts where it was edited and I wonder how much of it was manufactured. Is it real? or Is it an attempt to ruin Dave’s reputation?

I’m not going to try to defend anything said here, but there is a difference between proof and strong circumstantial evidence, which is what that was
Commentary
Dave’s construction of his self serves as a way for his fans to identify and bond with him – for them to get to feel as though they know him. This seems to work with teens (offroadfurry197) as well as guys his own age (TwinLt1Power). His account of his school experience and how he learned about cars and mechanics resonate well with his fans. The fact that he is an ordinary guy who was self-taught goes down well with this group. They can identify with him. He gives hope that ordinary blokes can be successful.
His fans are very supportive of his confession about being a hoarder. They can either identify with him by admitting they have a similar problem or reassure him that he can move on or that his problem is not as bad as he makes out. But the manic depression video with the implication that Dave is a pedophile leads to conflicting comments. His loyal supporters rally round against ‘the haters’ but others are deeply disturbed by these allegations – particularly as it seems Dave is admitting them. I have not seen any comments which question whether the video has been doctored although there is a response video that addresses those who feel the ‘evidence’ has been manufactured.
